Pope Leo XIV has confirmed all senior Vatican officials in their current roles on a temporary basis, the Vatican announced on Friday.
The decision allows the newly elected pontiff time to assess and reflect before making any permanent appointments to key positions.
Vatican officials, who are appointed to five-year terms, traditionally serve at the discretion of the pope. It is customary for a new pope to retain existing officials initially, before later determining any changes in leadership or direction.
The Vatican also confirmed that Pope Leo XIV’s formal inauguration Mass will be held on Sunday, May 18, in St. Peter’s Square, marking the official start of his papacy.
The newly elected pope, who was chosen on Thursday, is also scheduled to hold his first general audience on May 21.
