The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the mysterious death of a family of six in Ogale community, Eleme, Rivers State.

The victims—comprising a father, mother, three children and a relative—were reportedly found dead in their residence on Sunday morning by neighbours.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the command had launched a full investigation into the tragic incident.

According to her, the deceased were identified as Theophilus Obele (49), Eunice Obele (35), Saka Obele (18), Peace Obele (14), Nyimenka Obele (7) and Abel Nwaka (25). They were discovered lifeless in their rooms with the doors locked from the inside.

Iringe-Koko said the incident occurred on January 11, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., following a distress call from one Godwin Ogosu, who reported that his elder brother and family had failed to wake up after sleeping overnight.

She stated that operatives attached to the Eleme Division forced entry into the rooms and found the bodies.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, suggest possible generator fume poisoning, as a generator was reportedly left running in the parlour.

The corpses have been deposited at the Last Home Mortuary, Ebubu, for autopsy, while photographic evidence has been documented and investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a thorough probe into the incident and advised residents to always place generators in well-ventilated outdoor areas, away from doors and windows, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The command also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased.
