Tension has escalated in Ondo State following the arrest of suspected cult kingpins and alleged rapists in separate security operations across the state.
Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command apprehended two suspected cult leaders linked to a violent clash at the Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo town. The incident, which occurred on April 9, reportedly triggered panic within the campus and surrounding communities.
Police spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that the suspects—Nnamdi Sunday and Adegbuyi Seyi—were arrested by the Special Anti-Cultism Squad following credible intelligence. Preliminary investigations indicate links to the notorious Eiye and Aiye confraternities, both associated with violent rivalries in the state.
The suspects reportedly led police to a cult hideout at Oka Garage, where a locally made pistol was recovered. Authorities believe the weapon was used in criminal operations tied to cult activities.
While the state was still reacting to the cult arrests, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps made separate arrests involving alleged sexual assault cases.
According to NSCDC spokesperson, Daniel Aidamenbor, a 22-year-old suspect, Emeka Chidi Innocent, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a minor in Igbatoro after weeks on the run. In another case, a 38-year-old suspect, Ayodele John, was apprehended for allegedly defiling a teenage girl in Akure shortly after the incident.
Both suspects have reportedly made confessional statements and are expected to be charged to court. Authorities described the cases as particularly troubling, noting that the suspects were known to the victims.
Security agencies have assured residents that investigations are ongoing, with intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks and apprehend other suspects still at large.
