Scottish police are investigating reports that several foreign athletes failed to return home after competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Police Scotland said it had received reports of several athletes who were unaccounted for and confirmed enquiries were underway, with early engagement taking place with the UK Home Office to establish the circumstances.
Uganda’s NBS Sport reported that four members of the country’s six-person boxing team went missing before their scheduled departure on Tuesday. One of the missing athletes reportedly told the broadcaster he intended to seek asylum.
Pakistan Today also reported that one Pakistani boxer failed to board the team’s return flight home on Tuesday.
Incidents involving missing athletes have occurred at previous Commonwealth Games, particularly in Australia and Britain. Following the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Australian authorities were still searching for 50 athletes and officials a month after the event, while another 190 had applied for asylum.
Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competed during the 11-day Commonwealth Games, which concluded in Glasgow last Sunday.
