Peter Obi has defended his wife Margaret’s spending, saying she runs her own business and has the financial independence to decide how she spends her money.
The former Anambra State governor made the remarks during an interview in Washington, DC, while responding to public discussion surrounding a luxury Hermès handbag reportedly carried by his wife.
Obi said he does not concern himself with the cost of the bags and shoes his wife uses, provided her spending does not involve public funds.
“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?” Obi said.
“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” he added.
The reported handbag has generated discussion on social media, with attention focused on the contrast between the luxury item and Obi’s public image of frugality and prudent spending.
Obi also said he did not establish an office of the First Lady while serving as Anambra State governor.
The comments come as Obi remains a prominent figure ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with prudent spending and reducing the cost of governance among the themes associated with his public messaging.
