US President Donald Trump has confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during an Oval Office meeting on Tuesday, reviving a controversial and widely discredited narrative about alleged persecution of white farmers in South Africa.
Speaking to the press before their closed-door meeting, President Trump claimed that white South Africans are fleeing their country due to safety concerns. “People are fleeing South Africa for their own safety,” Trump said. “White farmers are fleeing South Africa—dozens have recently moved to the US as refugees.”
President Ramaphosa firmly rejected the claim, stating there was no state-sanctioned persecution of white South Africans. Trump responded by playing video footage inside the Oval Office, which he claimed showed violence against white farmers.
