Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November 28 are set to be postponed for several months as conditions worsen across the Palestinian territories, according to a letter from Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh to France.
In the letter, addressed to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and dated October 8, Al Sheikh said the circumstances anticipated when the election date was announced had not materialised.
“The assessment concluded that the anticipated political, security and economic conditions, on which the scheduling of the legislative elections for 28 November 2026 was based, have not materialized,” the letter stated.
It further warned that holding the elections under the current circumstances would face significant obstacles that could undermine the process.
The letter said the challenges could affect the inclusiveness of the elections, freedom of participation and the integrity of the electoral process.
