Abia Governor Otti Affirms Strong Support For Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Citing Longstanding Alignment

Governor Alex Otti has praised President Tinubu’s economic reforms, emphasising their shared vision beyond party politics and leadership.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, saying his alignment with the president on key economic policies predates current political affiliations.

Otti made the remarks while hosting Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, and former lawmaker Chris Adighije at his residence in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has implemented sweeping economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, the unification of exchange rates through naira flotation, and the introduction of the ‘Nigeria First’ policy aimed at prioritising local goods and services.

Speaking during the visit, Kalu commended Otti for his developmental strides in the state and urged him to lend support to the Tinubu administration.

Responding, Otti said he and the president share similar economic philosophies and that his support is rooted in long-standing principles rather than party loyalty.

“When you talk about supporting President Tinubu, the president and I are very good friends and our friendship predates party politics and current positions,” he said.

“We agree on so many issues; as it is natural, we know where we disagree. But, when you talk about the economy, what Mr President is doing has always been my position for a long time.”

Otti referenced his past writings as evidence of his consistent stance on subsidy removal and fiscal discipline.

“I urge people to go back and read my columns at the back of ThisDay newspaper some years back, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where I said that it was time to remove fuel subsidy when off-takers were rejecting crude shipped to them.

“So, it requires somebody with courage to remove that subsidy, and I support it. We have behaved in an irresponsible manner for a very long time.

“When you have years of irresponsible behaviour, the correction would be tough, challenging, and painful. It is the correction that we are going through now. If we don’t lose faith, we will eventually get it right.

“So, talking about supporting the president, it is a no-brainer. I will continue to support him because it is the same administration.”

Earlier, Kalu praised the governor for his performance in office, particularly in infrastructure development and improving the quality of life for Abia residents.

“You have done well for the state by fixing roads and improving the standard of living. The state will continue to grow under your leadership,” Kalu said.

He added, “When the people are satisfied with a governor, they will support him to continue to lead.”
