Osita Okechukwu: Law Didn’t Specify That Being A Former Police Officer Is Required Experience For EFCC Chairman

“…after the senate has finished with the era of Olukayode, you can approach the senate for an amendment of the law.”

The Director General of the Voice Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu has said that there is no place in the provision of the cognate experience required in the appointment of the chairman of the Economic Financial Crime Commission, that being an ex-police officer was attached.

During an interview on Wednesday with ARISE NEWS, Okechukwu defended President Bola Tinubu’s approval of Ola Olukoyode as the new EFCC, adding that if the law wanted it as a criterion, it would have been attached.

“The provisor of the cognate experience did not attach the cognate experience with the fact that he must be an ex-police officer. If the law wanted that, the law would have joined it.

“It is the position of the law that you do not out of your own wishes, start wearing the law garments. What you can do rather is that after the senate has finished with the era of Olukayode, you can approach the senate for an amendment of the law.” he said.

Okechukwu called on the critics of Olukoyede to calm down ascertaining the appointment of the former EFCC Secretary is a game changer for the anti-graft war crusade, considering Olukoyede’s track record.

“After a cursory analysis, I said it is (not) very unusual for controversy or debate to erupt after such sensitive appointments like that of the EFCC Chairman. What most of these people forget is the ageless maxim of one of the foremost physicists, Albert Einstein, that says that insanity is doing one thing again and again and expecting a different result.

“For God’s sake, the Nigerian police force act contains all manner of clauses that covers what the EFCC is doing, what ICP is doing, even what DSS is doing but it was because somehow it was found out that leaving an important crusade like the anti-graft war within the police force, might not produce the same result because it’s either we fight corruption or it kills Nigeria. That was why EFCC was set up.

“Now President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his own wisdom, looked into the background of Olukayode and that all his legal practice was on fraud matters.” he said

He also called on Olukayode to, if appointed, use his experience in fraud matters to thoroughly investigate a case before calling out anybody.
