The National Youth Service Corps has reacted to the detention of Sofiyat Akinlabi the female army officer who accepted a marriage proposal from a youth corps member.

The Director-General of the NYSC Shuaibu Ibrahim said that while the scheme encourages corps members to inter-marry to promote national integration, Sofiat Akinlabi’s case was unusual because she is a soldier and the army has its own regulations like other organisations which should be respected.

In a statement the Nigerian army claimed that the female officer was detained for violating the military’s rules of engagement. Sofiat’s detention has continued to elicit a wave of backlash amongst many Nigerians with over 10,000 signing a petition demanding her release, using the hashtag #FreeSofiyat.

Meanwhile, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has narrated how he once attempted to commit suicide but had to change his mind after listening to music.

The monarch, while speaking at an event tagged ‘Memorable Moments With Music’ on Wednesday, described music as a key component of human existence, an iconic cultural expression and the best endowment from God to humanity.

He said he began having suicidal tendencies after taking a loan of N8bn, 12 years ago, to build a high rise , which he had to pull down and lost all the money invested.

He then began listening to a series of inspirational music which in turn elevated his spirits.

In another development, the Ooni’s wife, Olori Naomi Silekunola took to Instagram on Thursday to announce that she no longer wants to be referred to as the queen of Ile-Ife or the wife of the monarch.

In a lengthy statement, Naomi detailed the issues that prompted the failure of their marriage of three years, further stating that she now wants to be referred to as the queen of the people and the mother of her son, Prince Tadenikawo Ogunwusi.
