Onyema: Improved Airport Infrastructure Will Boost Nigerian Airlines’ Global Competitiveness

Allen Onyema says lack of adequate transit systems remains a key obstacle to Nigerian airlines’ growth, welcomes recent government interventions

Air Peace Chairman and CEO, Allen Onyema, has said that Nigeria’s aviation sector can only achieve its full potential if airport infrastructure gaps are urgently addressed.
Speaking at the 29th League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) Annual Conference in Lagos, Onyema described inadequate facilities, particularly the absence of proper transit systems at major airports, as one of the biggest barriers to the growth and profitability of Nigerian airlines.
He explained that the lack of seamless passenger connectivity has long prevented Nigeria from functioning as a true regional hub. Onyema added that this inefficiency often drives travellers to other African airports.

Onyema welcomed the Federal Government’s recent plans to overhaul key airport infrastructure, including the rebuilding of Lagos airport facilities to accommodate modern transit operations. He expressed confidence that, with sustained focus from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria could within two years have the facilities needed to compete with Africa’s leading aviation hubs.
He further stressed that such upgrades would serve as a form of indirect financing for airlines by reducing operational inefficiencies, lowering unnecessary costs, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable expansion.
