Ogun State Halts Awujale Selection Amid Rising Security Concerns And Public Petitions

Ogun State halts Awujale selection process amid security concerns, petitions, and efforts to protect peace and tradition.

The Ogun State Government suspends the ongoing selection process for the new Awujale of Ijebuland, citing urgent concerns over rising petitions, security intelligence, and the imperative to preserve peace and the sacred integrity of the revered traditional stool.

In an official statement dated January 20, 2026, Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, reveals that the decision follows numerous petitions and reports from security agencies and key stakeholders deeply involved in the succession process. The government underscores the prominence of the Awujale stool as one of the foremost and most respected traditional institutions in Yorubaland, particularly in Ogun State.

The legacy of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona who reigned for an impressive 65 years has notably elevated the prestige and esteem of the throne on both a local and global scale. This towering legacy intensifies public attention and scrutiny on the emergence of his successor, making it critical for the government to act swiftly and decisively.

“The State Government receives several petitions and intelligence reports related to the ongoing selection. To maintain public order, safeguard the integrity of the process, and uphold the veneration of the stool, halting the selection is imperative at this time,” the statement emphasizes.

The government cites the legal backing of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the Executive Council to suspend appointments if deemed necessary for peace, order, and good governance. Acting proactively, the government aims to forestall any potential breakdown of law and order, ensuring the Awujale succession proceeds through a transparent and universally accepted process.

Consequently, the government directs immediate communication of this suspension to the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, the latter specifically instructed to await further government directives regarding the resumption of the selection process.

This development temporarily stalls the highly anticipated succession to the prestigious Awujale throne as the Ogun State Government undertakes a careful review, reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful, credible, and inclusive resolution.
