Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has awarded N50 million in education support to a student who delivered an impromptu speech at the inauguration of a new technical college in Oghareki.
The beneficiary, Miss Ogheneovo Davina, a Junior Technical II student, addressed the governor on behalf of her fellow students during the inauguration of the Model Technical College in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, on Friday.
Davina expressed appreciation for the state government’s investment in technical education and pledged that the students would make good use of the facilities to acquire practical skills and become self-reliant after graduation.
She also said she would have voted for Oborevwori in the 2027 general elections if she were 18 years old.
The governor’s announcement came as he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving education infrastructure across Delta State, directing the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to assess public schools in poor condition for immediate rehabilitation.
Oborevwori said the state government had already directed the education ministries to identify schools requiring urgent intervention, adding that the scale of the task demanded sustained investment and planning.
Delta State has more than 1,400 public primary schools and 480 secondary schools, according to the governor.
He described the newly inaugurated technical college as part of efforts to equip young people in Ethiope West and neighbouring communities with practical skills to improve their employment prospects and economic independence.
The institution has workshops, staff and student accommodation, and sports facilities. Oborevwori urged its management, staff and students to maintain the facilities for future generations.
He also announced plans to complete and inaugurate three other model technical colleges at Irri in Isoko South, Kiagbodo in Burutu and Akugbene in Bomadi local government areas before December 2026.
Former Delta State Governor James Ibori commended Oborevwori for completing the Oghareki project, which was initiated under the administration of his successor, Ifeanyi Okowa.
Ibori also praised the governor’s development projects across the state, particularly in Urhobo land, and expressed confidence in his administration.
The inauguration was attended by political leaders and community representatives, including Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, and Christian Onogba, chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council.
The Oghara monarch, HRM Noble Etsemitan Uku Oghara Na Me, also congratulated the governor on the completion of the college.
