North Korea has relaunched a 5,000-tonne destroyer that was damaged during an attempted launch in May, according to state media KCNA. The warship, which is now moored at a pier following a successful second launch on Thursday, underwent structural rebalancing earlier in June.
Experts are expected to examine the ship’s hull over the next 7 to 10 days at Rajin Dockyard, with full restoration projected to conclude before an upcoming ruling party meeting this month.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had previously criticised the failed launch as a result of “carelessness,” saying it had “tarnished national dignity.” He subsequently issued a directive for the ship’s restoration to be completed in time for the party gathering. The relaunch appears to be part of efforts to reinforce military strength and national pride ahead of the meeting.
