Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has won an Emmy Award, a major international honour recognising excellence in television and streaming productions, for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda.
The Television Academy announced Dunkwu among the 2026 juried Emmy winners in August, with the award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design, recognising his work on the episode “Into the Lion’s Den.”
Unlike competitive Emmy categories, juried awards are determined by panels of industry professionals, who assess entries and select the recipients. The juried awards were presented as part of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies in Los Angeles in September.
Dunkwu is a Lagos-based visual development artist, character designer, animation director and educator whose professional work includes projects associated with Marvel, Netflix and Disney.
He studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin before developing his artistic career through comics, illustration, concept art and animation.
Dunkwu joined the production of Eyes of Wakanda in 2021 as an early concept artist, contributing to character development and designs for members of the Dora Milaje.
His work later extended to characters across the animated series, which follows Wakandan warriors through different periods of history as they seek to recover vibranium artefacts and protect Wakanda.
Following the announcement of his Emmy win, Dunkwu dedicated the recognition to emerging artists in Nigeria and across the Global South.
“Out of hundreds of entries, my work on Eyes Of Wakanda was selected as worthy for an Emmy win,” Dunkwu said in a statement shared on his social media platforms.
“This win is for the rising talents from Nigeria and the global south. We can compete on the world stage!” he added.
Dunkwu also thanked Marvel Studios, the Television Academy and members of the Eyes of Wakanda creative team for their support and contribution to the project.
The Emmy recognition follows an earlier Concept Art Association award for Dunkwu’s character concept art for Noni, another character from the Marvel project.
Beyond his work on international productions, Dunkwu continues to share his knowledge of character design through tutorials, courses and educational content for aspiring artists.
