Nigerian Artist Lola Mewu Breaks Guinness World Record for Longest Painting Marathon

The achievement, once confirmed, would mark her as the third Guinness World Record holder from Nigeria in 2023.

In an extraordinary display of creativity and endurance, Nigerian visual artist Lola Mewu, also known as Oyinlola Odumewu, has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest painting marathon. Lola embarked on this challenging journey on October 28, 2023, at the Safe House in Adeola Hopewell Street, Eti-Osa, Lagos, with the goal of surpassing the previous record of 60 hours set by Belgian-Canadian artist Roland Palmaerts in 2013.

Lola’s attempt to break the record captured the attention of art enthusiasts and supporters nationwide. The painting marathon officially commenced at 6:30 p.m. on October 28, with Lola demonstrating her artistic prowess and determination throughout the event. As part of the Guinness World Records (GWR) requirements, Lola created a series of captivating artworks, including pieces titled “One Touch,” “Pemi Pada Owonromi,” and “Ejire Ara Isokun.” These paintings were auctioned and sold, with enthusiastic bidding from art lovers, starting at ₦40,000.

Support poured in from friends, family, and fellow Nigerians, who flooded social media with encouraging messages. Videos circulated online showcasing Lola’s unwavering commitment, including heartwarming moments when she listened to voice notes filled with words of encouragement. Several individuals visited her painting station at Safe House, providing moral support and cheering her on.

Lola reached the remarkable milestone of 72 hours, surpassing the previous record, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The achievement, once confirmed, would mark her as the third Guinness World Record holder from Nigeria in 2023, following the accomplishments of Philip Solomon and celebrity chef Hilda Baci earlier in the year.

In May 2023, Philip Solomon, a 17-year-old pupil from Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure, Ondo State, set a record for the most skips on one foot in 30 seconds. He outdid the previous record holder, Rasel Islam of Bangladesh, with an impressive feat of 153 skips in January 2023.

Celebrity chef Hilda Baci made headlines in June 2023 when she broke the record for the longest cooking marathon. During the event, which took place from May 11 to 15, Baci cooked continuously for an astounding 93 hours and 11 minutes, preparing over 100 pots of food.

Lola’s achievement not only highlights her talent as an artist but also showcases the resilience and determination of Nigerian individuals in pursuing excellence on the global stage. Her accomplishment will undoubtedly inspire aspiring artists and creatives across the nation, encouraging them to pursue their passions and dreams with unwavering dedication.
