President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked Armstrong Idachaba as the Director-General of Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Mr Armstrong’s dismissal comes amidst the frenzy that’s enveloped the ban on Twitter and plots to regulate social media.

NBC, in a newspaper advertorial on Thursday, asked all social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers in Nigeria to apply for broadcast licences.

The Nigerian Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the appointment in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday and also announced the appointment of Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, a broadcaster, as the new Director-General of the NBC.

Mr Mohammed said Ilelah’s appointment is for a tenure of five years in the first instance.

Mr Idachaba was appointed acting Director-General of the commission replacing Modibbo Kawu who was suspended for alleged financial impropriety in February 2020.
