The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, was on Thursday  announced the new 13th Vice-Chancellor of the premier university.

The Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who made the announcement at about 8 pm Thursday, at the Senate Chambers of the university, said Adebowale emerged the winner at the conclusion of shortlisting and interviewing process of 15 candidates.

Adebowale’s emergence brought to an end fresh VC appointment process which began on July 4.

The John Odigie-Oyegun led governing council had then cancelled the earlier exercise which was stalled and ridden with crises.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the university, Prof. Babatunde Ekanola, since November 30, 2021 served out an initial six months tenure as the acting Vice Chancellor and was allowed to serve another six months tenure out of a doctrine of necessity.

The position of the Vice Chancellor became vacant on December 1, 2020, following the expiration of the tenure of the former VC, Prof. Idowu Olayinka.

Adebowale while speaking shortly after being announced as the new Vice Chancellor of the university, said with support of staff, students and management the university will be taken to greater heights, stating that though he was the best candidate God had spoken and there is work to be done.

He was born on 11 January, 1962 to the family of late Mr. and Mrs. Adebowale Esuruoso. He had his primary education between 1967 and 1972 at St. Marks Primary School, Oke-Jaga, Ijebu-Igbo while his secondary education was at Ayedaade Grammar School, Ikire between 1973 and 1978. He proceeded to the University of Ibadan in September 1980 where he obtained a B.Sc degree in Chemistry in June 1984; M.Sc degree in Industrial Chemistry in September, 1985 and Ph.D in Industrial Chemistry in October, 1991.
