Nicholas Hoult will play the vain and arrogant wizard Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series, according to Variety.
The actor is set to join the cast as the series moves into its adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s bestselling series.
Lockhart is a prominent character in the second instalment, portrayed as a celebrated wizard who becomes Hogwarts’ new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Despite his reputation for heroic exploits, his arrogance and lack of competence soon become apparent.
Hoult takes over the role previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The role marks another major franchise appearance for Hoult, who previously played Dr Hank McCoy/Beast in several X-Men films and currently portrays Lex Luthor in DC Studios’ superhero franchise.
He first appeared as Lex Luthor in Superman in 2025 and is expected to reprise the role in Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 2027.
Hoult’s other notable film credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, Nosferatu, Juror #2, The Menu and Renfield. He also starred in Hulu’s critically acclaimed series The Great, earning an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations.
The second season of Harry Potter is expected to begin filming this autumn, with Dominic McLaughlin playing Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
The wider cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The first season is scheduled to debut on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, with the opening season adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The series has already been renewed for a second season, which will focus on The Chamber of Secrets.
Jon Brown, who worked as a writer on the first season, has been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2 alongside series developer and current showrunner Francesca Gardiner.
Gardiner will executive produce with director Mark Mylod, while Rowling will also executive produce alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.
