NFF Celebrates ‘Dedicated and Humble Leader’ William Troost-Ekong On Retirement

NFF celebrates Troost-Ekong’s retirement, calling him a model of humility, discipline and excellence after 83 international appearances.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has paid glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his announcement of immediate retirement from international football after a decade of service.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NFF described Troost-Ekong as “a dedicated, selfless and humble leader” whose commitment to the national team set a benchmark for professionalism and patriotism.

Troost-Ekong, who made his Super Eagles debut in 2015, earned 83 caps across five major competitions, representing Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments—2019, 2021 and 2023. He won AFCON silver and bronze medals during his career.

The federation praised his influence on and off the pitch, noting that even before becoming captain, he was “pleasant, disciplined and ambitious,” always wearing the national colours with joy and focus.

Troost-Ekong’s performances at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire were highlighted as a defining period. He scored crucial goals that helped Nigeria reach the final and was named Man of the Competition, becoming the first Nigerian in decades to win the AFCON MVP award.

The NFF added that the defender leaves the international stage “a fulfilled man” whose decade-long service remains a reference point for younger players.

“As he retires from the international game, the Nigeria Football Federation wishes William Troost-Ekong the very best in his future endeavours and will support him in achieving his goals within the round-leather game,” the statement said.
