The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the death of one of its officers during a drug raid in Bonny Island, Rivers State, where six suspected drug traffickers were arrested.
The operation, conducted last Friday at the Ama Hausa area of Bonny Island, led to the seizure of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk (cannabis) and tramadol, according to a statement by the agency.
The raid reportedly turned violent when armed hoodlums, allegedly mobilised by the suspects, attacked NDLEA operatives during the exercise.
One of the officers, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, sustained fatal head injuries in the clash. He was rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Despite the attack, NDLEA operatives successfully arrested all six suspects, including the alleged gang leader, Genesis George Benson, who the agency said orchestrated the resistance that led to Mujahid’s death.
Other suspects arrested are ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed and Muhammed Yusuf.
Reacting to the incident, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), commended the courage of the operatives, describing the fallen officer as disciplined and dedicated.
He extended condolences to Mujahid’s family, colleagues and the NDLEA Rivers State Command, warning that attacks on NDLEA personnel would not be tolerated.
The agency said investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of preliminary inquiries.
