Multiple people have died following a shooting incident at Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach, New South Wales Police have confirmed, after two gunmen opened fire in the popular coastal area.
Police said the attackers were “neutralised” and two suspects have been detained. While authorities have not released an official death toll, they confirmed that several people lost their lives in the incident. Two police officers were also injured and are receiving medical treatment.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes unfolding at Bondi Beach as “shocking and distressing,” expressing sympathy for the victims and their families while commending emergency responders for their swift action.
An eyewitness who spoke to the BBC said he was attending a Hanukkah event on the beach with his children when the shooting began, forcing them to flee in panic. He described scenes of chaos as families and beachgoers ran for safety.
Police have said it remains unclear whether the shooting was connected to the Hanukkah gathering. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as detectives work to establish the motive behind the attack.
Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most famous tourist destinations, was swiftly evacuated as emergency services secured the area and launched a full-scale response.
