Minnesota Officials Name Man Killed By Federal Agents In Minneapolis As US Citizen Alex Pretti

Federal immigration officers fatally shoot Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti, prompting protests, lawsuits, and conflicting accounts from authorities.

Federal immigration officers have shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, with local officials identifying the victim as Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse and US citizen.

Minnesota senators confirmed Pretti’s identity following the shooting, which has sparked protests, vigils, and clashes with law enforcement across the city. His parents described him as a “kindhearted soul.”

The incident comes less than three weeks after another American citizen, Renee Good, was fatally shot by an immigration agent in Minneapolis, intensifying scrutiny of federal enforcement operations in the state.

Federal and state authorities have issued sharply conflicting accounts of the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said agents fired what she described as “defensive shots” after Pretti allegedly “reacted violently.” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz rejected that account, calling it “nonsense” and “lies.”

President Donald Trump has meanwhile accused Minneapolis Mayor and Governor Walz of encouraging an “insurrection,” as demonstrations continue in the city.

In response to the killing, Minnesota authorities have filed a lawsuit against multiple federal agencies to prevent the destruction of evidence related to the shooting. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension jointly filed the lawsuit and a motion for a temporary restraining order in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

The defendants named in the filing include the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, the US Border Control, their respective leadership, and US Attorney General Pam Bondi.

According to the county attorney’s office, the lawsuit seeks to preserve evidence removed from the scene by federal agents, which state authorities say prevented them from conducting an independent inspection.

“Evidence covered by today’s filings includes material the defendants, and those acting at their direction, took from the scene of the shooting,” the office said in a statement.
