Mexico Approves Reno Omokri’s Ambassadorial Appointment

Mexico grants diplomatic approval for Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, ending eight months of uncertainty over his posting.

Mexico has approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, ending eight months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.

Omokri announced the approval in a post on X on Tuesday, saying José Manuel Briseño Flores, chargé d’affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic consent, known as agrément, to Babagana Wakil, director of protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The approval covers Omokri’s appointment as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me,” Omokri wrote.

President Bola Tinubu approved Omokri’s posting to Mexico in March as part of the appointments of 65 ambassador-designates and high commissioners to their respective countries.

However, Omokri’s appointment remained pending because Mexico had yet to grant the required diplomatic approval.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among the countries that had yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.

The ministry said it was engaging the relevant authorities and expressed confidence that the approvals would be conveyed in due course.

Agrément is the formal consent a host country gives before an ambassador nominated by another country can take up the appointment.
