NDC House of Representatives candidate, Dr. Maxwell Opara, has outlined his vision for legislative service ahead of the 2027 general elections, pledging to strengthen oversight, improve lawmaking and hold both the executive and judiciary accountable.

Speaking during an interview With ARISE NEWS on Friday, Opara said his decision to contest for the House of Representatives was driven by years of challenging government actions through the courts and his desire to bring greater accountability to public institutions.

Speaking on the role of lawmakers, he said:

“One of the primary functions of the legislature is to make laws and carry out oversight functions against the executive and the judiciary.”

On why he is seeking elective office, Opara stated:

“I am tired of going to court. I want to participate to show them what representation is all about. I want to participate to show them what lawmaking is all about. I want to participate to show them the duty of a lawmaker.”

Addressing concerns over accountability in the National Assembly, he argued that legislators must actively scrutinize government actions.

“Nobody to checkmate the executive, that’s why they are misbehaving. Nobody to checkmate the judiciary, that’s why they are misbehaving.”

Highlighting his record of public interest litigation, Opara said he had repeatedly written to the National Assembly over issues ranging from public appointments to government spending, but resorted to legal action when lawmakers failed to act.

“I wrote a letter to the National Assembly… Nobody gave attention to my letter. I had to go to court.”

On his legislative priorities, he added:

“I am not going there for contracts. I am going there to make the law that will better the life of the society and that of the federal constituency in particular.”

Concluding, Opara appealed to NDC members to remain calm and avoid protests following the court ruling affecting the party.

“This particular judgment will not stand. I know that the Court of Appeal is going to do justice on it. We are afraid that if they don’t do justice, they are inviting anarchy.”
