Mauritius Prime Minister Dismisses Central Bank’s Second Deputy Governor Amid Leadership Rift

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has dismissed the central bank’s second deputy governor following rifts between the bank’s officials

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has dismissed Gerard Sanspeur, the second deputy governor of the Bank of Mauritius, following reports of a deepening rift among the central bank’s top officials.

The move, reported by L’Express newspaper on Friday, comes after weeks of speculation about tensions between Sanspeur and Governor Rama Sithanen. Local media suggested the standoff had raised concerns at the highest levels of government.

Speaking to Le Défi Media Group earlier this week, Ramgoolam described the situation as “unacceptable” and said he was determined to act swiftly. “I am trying to move as quickly as possible and hope to resolve the issue by the end of the week,” he noted.

Sanspeur, who had served as the number three official at the central bank, announced on his Facebook page that he would hold a press conference at 3 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Friday.

The dismissal underscores ongoing instability at the Bank of Mauritius, which plays a key role in managing the island nation’s monetary policy, financial stability, and international credibility. Observers say Ramgoolam’s intervention reflects concern that leadership disputes could undermine confidence in the institution at a time of economic challenges.
