Manchester United have reportedly fined defender Lisandro Martínez after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy following their 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
The Argentine centre-back expressed frustration with United’s summer transfer business and questioned whether manager Michael Carrick had received enough backing to assemble a squad capable of competing with Europe’s top clubs.
Martínez also directed criticism at the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, expressing dissatisfaction with United’s recruitment strategy. “I expect more from our technical director.”
His comments drew attention to tensions surrounding the club’s transfer decisions and the relationship between players and senior management.
The 28-year-old later issued a public apology, acknowledging that his frustration following the defeat had influenced his decision to speak out.
He admitted that the timing and manner of his comments were inappropriate and stressed the need for unity within the club.
Martínez also maintained that everyone at Manchester United shared the same objective of returning the club to success.
Reports indicate that United subsequently imposed a fine on the defender. The club has not publicly disclosed details of any disciplinary action.
The incident comes amid scrutiny of United’s performances and recruitment strategy as the club seeks to improve its results.
Attention will now turn to whether Martínez can move beyond the controversy and help his teammates deliver better performances in their upcoming fixtures.
