A 53-year-old white British man has been arrested following an incident in which a car drove into pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, Merseyside Police have confirmed.
It remains unclear whether the man is believed to be the driver of the vehicle. In a statement, police urged the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident as investigations continue.
Thousands had gathered in the city centre to celebrate the football club’s Premier League triumph when the incident occurred. Officers quickly cordoned off the area, and emergency services, including crews from the North West Ambulance Service, are currently at the scene providing assistance.
Police have yet to confirm whether anyone has been injured in the incident, and no further details about the vehicle or potential motives have been released at this stage.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the reports, describing the “scenes in Liverpool” as “appalling” and praised the emergency services for their swift and professional response.
Authorities have promised to provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available.
