Madonna dominated the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards after winning seven trophies, including Artist of the Year, for her album Confessions II.
The pop icon’s success at the ceremony mirrored her performance at the 1998 VMAs, where she won six awards for her album Ray of Light.
Nearly three decades later, Madonna returned to the top of the winners’ list with victories across major categories, including Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography and Best Long Form Video for Confessions II – The Film.
She also won Best Album for Confessions II.
Madonna shared the Best Collaboration award with Sabrina Carpenter for their song Bring Your Love. The pair appeared on stage together to accept the award.
Taylor Swift was also among the biggest winners of the night, taking home Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia and Best Direction for Opalite.
Swift also received the special MTV VMA Artist Director Honour, recognising her creative role behind music visuals.
Other major winners included BTS, who won Song of the Year for Swim, Best K-Pop and Best Group.
Sienna Spiro won Best New Artist, while LISA claimed Best Pop for Dream featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi.
Cardi B featuring Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for Safe, Bruno Mars won Best R&B for I Just Might, and Olivia Rodrigo took Best Alternative for the cure.
Bad Bunny won Best Latin for NUEVAYoL, while Ella Langley continued her successful year by winning Best Country for Choosin’ Texas.
In technical categories, PinkPantheress won Best Art Direction for Stateside + Zara Larsson, Sabrina Carpenter won Best Editing for House Tour, and Ariana Grande won Best Visual Effects for hate that i made you love me.
Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, while Ariana Grande’s hate that i made you love me won Song of Summer.
The 2026 MTV VMAs celebrated major achievements across pop, hip-hop, country, R&B, K-pop and alternative music, with Madonna’s seven-award haul marking one of the night’s biggest moments.
