Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić has penned a heartfelt farewell letter to fans as he prepares to play his final match at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, bringing an iconic chapter in football history to a close after 12 unforgettable years at the club.
In an emotional open letter on X (formerly Twitter), addressed to “Dear Madrid fans,” the 38-year-old expressed the difficulty of saying goodbye to the club he has long called home. “The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end,” he wrote.
Modrić recalled arriving at Real Madrid in 2012 with ambition, never imagining the historic heights he would help the club reach. Over the past decade, he has played a central role in countless triumphs, including multiple UEFA Champions League titles, La Liga victories, and unforgettable comeback moments.
“Playing at Real Madrid changed my life as a soccer player and as a person,” he said, adding that he is “proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
He extended deep gratitude to club president Florentino Pérez, teammates, coaches, and all those who supported him throughout his journey. Yet above all, Modrić reserved his deepest thanks for the fans, describing their support as a bond that words could scarcely capture.
“I really don’t know how to explain the special connection I have with you and how supported, respected and loved I have felt and feel,” he wrote. “I will never forget each ovation and all the gestures of affection you have shown me.”
Although Modrić will no longer don the famous white shirt after the upcoming Club World Cup, he vowed to remain a Madridista for life.
“Leaving with a full heart. Filled with pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories. And even though, after the Club World Cup, I’m no longer going to wear this shirt on the field, I’ll always be a Madrid fan. Hala Madrid y nada más!” he concluded.
Saturday’s match at the Bernabéu promises to be an emotional send-off for a legend who gave his all to the club and earned a place among its all-time greats.
