Trevoh Chalobah is set to join England’s World Cup squad after Tino Livramento suffered a calf injury that is expected to rule him out of the tournament.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has up to 24 hours before Wednesday’s Group L opener against Croatia to name a replacement, with Chelsea defender Chalobah set to fill the vacant spot.
The setback is another injury blow for Livramento, whose season with Newcastle United was disrupted by knee, hamstring and thigh problems. The defender made 26 appearances in all competitions but missed 25 matches through injury.
Chalobah, 26, has made just one appearance for England, coming in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal last year.
England open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday as Tuchel’s side look to overcome the loss of one of their defensive options.
