Award-winning rapper Lil Nas X has been arrested following an altercation with police in Los Angeles, authorities confirmed.
Police were called to Ventura Boulevard at 05:30 (12:30 GMT) on Thursday after reports of a man walking in the street wearing only underwear.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that upon arrival, officers alleged the Old Town Road singer “charged” at them. He was then arrested on suspicion of battery.
Police spokesman Charles Miller added that the rapper was later taken to hospital for treatment over a possible overdose.
Unverified video footage published, appeared to show the star on Thursday morning dancing in the street in just underwear and cowboy boots, calling out to passersby to “come to the party.”
Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, is set to release his much-anticipated second studio album Dreamboy later this year. He has teased new music on Instagram in recent weeks.
The Atlanta-born star broke barriers in 2019 as the first openly gay man to win a Country Music Association award, following the global success of Old Town Road. The record won two Grammys and spent a record 17 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Throughout his career, Lil Nas X has faced criticism from conservative groups in the US, particularly over his provocative hit Montero (Call Me By Your Name). In response, the rapper has leaned into controversy with satire, at one point sharing a fake apology video that cut directly to the song’s infamous lap-dancing scene.
