Leicester City Relegated To English Third Tier After Hull Draw Completes Second Straight Demotion

Leicester City have been relegated to the third tier of English football, just 10 years after historic Premier League title triumph.

Ten years after authoring the ultimate sporting fairytale, former Premier League champions Leicester are on the brink of a humiliating relegation to the third tier. Leicester suffered a second straight relegation, while Coventry sealed promotion as Championship champions with emphatic victory.

Leicester City were relegated to the third tier of English football on Tuesday after drawing 2-2 at home with Hull City, completing a second successive demotion just 10 years after their historic Premier League title triumph.

The result left Leicester in 23rd place on 42 points from 44 matches, seven points from safety with only two games remaining, making survival mathematically impossible. Hull, chasing promotion, twice came from behind to secure a crucial point at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester fell behind in the 18th minute when Liam Miller capitalised on a mistake by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. The hosts briefly revived hopes in the second half as Jordan James equalised from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute before Luke Thomas put them ahead two minutes later. Hull responded in the 63rd minute through Oli McBurnie.

The relegation marks a dramatic decline for Leicester, who stunned world football in 2015-16 by winning the Premier League title as 5,000-1 outsiders under manager Claudio Ranieri. The club also lifted the FA Cup in 2021.

Leicester’s troubles deepened this season after a six-point deduction for breaches of English Football League profitability and sustainability rules. They also suffered recent defeats to Swansea City and Portsmouth before Tuesday’s draw confirmed relegation.
