LASTMA Rescues Two Severely Burnt Victims As Diesel Tanker Plunges From Otedola Bridge

LASTMA and emergency responders rescue two severely burnt victims after a diesel tanker plunges from Otedola Bridge and triggers a major inferno.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says two people have sustained severe burn injuries after a diesel-laden tanker plunged from Otedola Bridge and caught fire beneath the bridge.

In a press release, LASTMA said its emergency response team worked with other emergency management agencies to rescue the victims from the scene of the incident.

The victims were subsequently evacuated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit (LRU) to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Toll-Gate, for immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service battled the inferno to contain the fire, prevent it from spreading and avert further casualties and damage to surrounding infrastructure.

Other agencies involved in the rescue and firefighting operations included the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency and police personnel from the Alausa Police Division.

LASTMA said the coordinated response demonstrated the importance of collaboration among emergency agencies in managing high-risk incidents and preventing further harm.

The authority’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the responding agencies for their prompt intervention, which facilitated the rescue and evacuation of the injured victims while firefighting operations continued.

Bakare-Oki also expressed his wishes for the victims’ swift and complete recovery, stressing the importance of rapid emergency response and collaboration in protecting lives during road traffic incidents.

LASTMA urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, to conduct regular mechanical inspections, comply with prescribed safety standards and drive responsibly to reduce preventable road accidents.

The authority also reaffirmed its commitment to traffic regulation enforcement, traffic management and the coordination of emergency operations across Lagos State.
