Lagos Government Shuts Down Illegal Abattoir in Oko-Oba, Confiscate Contaminated Meat

Lagos State authorities have shut down an illegal abattoir in Oko-Oba Agege, citing grave public health and environmental risks.

The Lagos State Government has shut down an illegal abattoir discovered along Succo Road in Oko-Oba, Agege, directly opposite the RRS Barracks and LASTMA Yard, citing serious health and environmental concerns.

According to the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the facility was uncovered by enforcement teams during a recent operation. The discovery prompted swift action to prevent contaminated meat from entering the public food supply.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday by the ministry’s enforcement squad led by Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) operatives, resulted in arrests and the confiscation of contaminated meat from cows and goats, which officials said was being prepared for public consumption.

Wahab, in a post on X, said, “Our team uncovered an illegal abattoir operating at Succo Road, directly opposite the RRS Barracks and LASTMA Yard in Oko-Oba Agege. This operation posed serious health and environmental risks to the public.

We acted swiftly. Arrests have been made, and the contaminated meat has been confiscated to prevent it from entering the food chain. We need to make it clear that such disregard for public health and sanitation will not be tolerated in Lagos State.”

He warned that the state would not tolerate operations that endanger lives or breach sanitation regulations, stressing that the government’s responsibility is to uphold environmental standards and protect residents from harm.

“Our duty is to protect lives, uphold environmental laws, and ensure that only safe and approved facilities operate within the communities,” Wahab added.

The latest enforcement action is part of Lagos State’s broader efforts to improve public hygiene, regulate animal slaughter practices, and eliminate unauthorised operations that pose threats to health and safety.
