In Lagos State, the government demolished at least 100 properties in Oworonshoki’s Ojulari and Coker Street areas, leaving a number of families homeless amid clashes with police and alleged thugs.
It comes as a video emerged on Sunday showing a bulldozer demolishing a house in the middle of the night that allegedly had people inside.
In a swift rebuttal, The Lagos State Police Command defended the demolition exercise, asserting that the demolition, carried out by state government agencies, followed all legal processes and that compensation had been paid to those affected.
Similarly, the Lagos State Government defended the action as necessary to remove illegal floodplain structures. The government also held a ceremony at the Palace of Oworo Kingdom to present cheques to 79 Oworo community residents.
However, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer Femi Falana accused the Lagos State Government of carrying out unlawful demolition, saying the government acted in flagrant breach and contempt for the rule of law.
