Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, Senatorial Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Lagos Central, has congratulated the people of Osun State following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the August 15 governorship election.
Johnson, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the outcome as a victory for democracy, saying Osun voters had resisted alleged intimidation and financial inducements during the election.
He said the people had sent a clear message that “the sovereignty of the people is not for sale”.
“I warmly congratulate the good people of Osun State on ensuring the re-election of a leadership they believe has performed,” Johnson said.
He also claimed that reports from polling areas showed alleged financial inducements of up to N50,000, which voters rejected while chanting “Owo wo ina”.
According to him, the development showed that voters could reject attempts to influence their choices with money.
“They took the money meant to compromise them, threw its influence into the fire, and voted their conscience,” he said.
Johnson described the election outcome as a “roadmap” for Nigerians, arguing that a united electorate could overcome political pressure.
“This historic triumph must serve as a resounding Clarion Call for all Nigerians,” he said.
He further called on Nigerians, particularly Lagos residents, to draw lessons from the Osun election by participating actively in elections and protecting their votes.
“We must reject the fatalistic lie that our votes do not count,” he said.
Johnson said the outcome should mark the beginning of stronger political participation across the country.
“Osun has lit the torch of resistance and democratic integrity; we must now carry that flame into every local government, every ward, and every polling unit across Nigeria.”
He concluded with a call to Nigerians to participate in future elections and defend their mandates.
“Stand up, show up, vote, and defend your mandate!”
