The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Danjuma Shekwolo, on Wednesday reacted to his call on FCT residents to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the council, saying it was taken out of context.
According to him, the comment, which elicited national outcry and criticism after a video of him went viral, was made during a meeting with APC youths and loyalists and was not intended to deny residents their rights because of their political affiliation.
Arise News reports that Shekwolo in the trending video said he would not accept opposition from residents who had benefited from interventions by President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
“I have said in my area council, it’s either you are doing APC or leave the area council. I am not arguing with you,” he said.
But the Kuje Area Council Chairman said in Abuja that the comments were made during a specific discussion centred on “administrative efficiency, local development and community welfare”.
He said, “I address you today to set the record straight regarding recent reports circulating across various news platforms and social media.
“In public governance, clarity, truth, and transparency are essential. In recent days, certain statements I made were taken out of context leading to a distorted narrative that does not reflect my true intent, core values, or the official position of this administration.
“While I deeply respect the press and its vital role as a pillar of our democracy, it is crucial to clarify what the intent of the message was for and who.
“The remarks in question were made in a specific context aimed at addressing administrative efficiency, local development, and community welfare.
You may recall that the event that led to the unfortunate incidents was a meeting with the APC party youths and loyalists. And as the Executive Chairman of Kuje Area Council, I have no right to disenfranchise any residence or citizen of their fundamental human rights in the council.
Let me state sincerely that: our administration remains fully committed to inclusive governance, equity, and the total progress of every community in the Kuje Area Council.
“At no point did I intend to cause disaffection, undermine any group, or promote policies that do not serve the best interest of our citizens.
“I urge the good people of Kuje Area Council and the general public regardless of their political affiliation, religious or ethnic differences to join hands with our administration to make Kuje Area Council of our dreams.
“I also appeal to members of the media to maintain high standards of professional journalism by verifying context before publication because we are partners in progress.
“Our doors remain open for constructive feedback, dialogue, and accurate reporting.”
