Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on Nigerians to rekindle their commitment to unity, civic responsibility, and democratic engagement as the nation commemorates Democracy Day 2025.

In a message to mark June 12, Governor Ododo described the day as a “defining moment in Nigeria’s journey toward democratic governance,” asserting that democracy is not gifted but earned through sacrifice and persistent struggle.

“Today, we celebrate as one people, united in history, in hope, and in purpose,” the Governor declared, as he paid glowing tribute to the heroes of the 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll despite being annulled.

Ododo singled out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as a central figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, stating: “The sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes, including our father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, must never be forgotten.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the democratic ideals of inclusion, justice, and accountability, pledging to sustain a people-centred government that delivers tangible outcomes across key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and security.

“We are not only beneficiaries of the democracy earned through the blood and sweat of our heroes; we are stewards of its promise,” he said.

The Governor stressed that democracy thrives on citizen participation and strong institutions, noting that his government continues to prioritise transparency, institutional reforms, and youth empowerment. Addressing the younger generation, he declared, “To our youth, you are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the true guardians of our democracy today.”

Governor Ododo also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society actors and public servants to lead by example and commit to service delivery. “Let us remember that democracy is strengthened not by titles, but by service… not by rhetoric, but by results,” he stated.

He warned against forces that threaten national unity and democratic values, urging citizens to remain vigilant in defending Nigeria’s collective interests from division and disruption.

The Governor reiterated his full support for the policies and programmes of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising Kogi State’s alignment with national development goals.

“Let us rise together in the spirit of nationhood. Let us stand together in the pursuit of progress. Let us walk together on the path of peace, equity, and sustainable development,” Ododo concluded.
