Kebbi State Government has confirmed that 25 female students of Maga Comprehensive Girls Secondary School were abducted during a deadly terrorist attack that also claimed the life of the school’s vice principal.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmed Idris said the gunmen invaded the school in the early hours, shooting sporadically and causing widespread panic among students and staff. He added that while security agencies are still compiling full details, the confirmed number of abducted students stands at 25.
Deputy Governor Umar Tafida has led a delegation of senior government officials and security operatives to the scene to assess the extent of the attack, coordinate rescue efforts, and provide support to survivors. Authorities say several other staff and students sustained varying degrees of injuries as they attempted to escape the assault.
Eyewitnesses reported that the terrorists overwhelmed the school guards and moved swiftly through the compound before whisking the students away toward the nearby forest. The vice principal, who tried to protect the girls, was fatally shot during the attack.
Security agencies have since commenced a coordinated pursuit of the attackers, while additional personnel have been deployed to secure surrounding communities and prevent further incidents. The state government urged residents to remain calm, assuring that every necessary measure is being taken to rescue the abducted students.
Governor Ahmed Idris condemned the attack, describing it as a “senseless and heartbreaking assault on innocent children,” and vowed that the perpetrators will be captured and brought to justice. He also emphasised ongoing efforts to support affected families and strengthen school security across the state.
