The Kano State Police Command has dismantled several criminal hideouts and arrested 244 suspects in August 2026, even as gunmen suspected to be bandits killed the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji Local Government Area, Alhaji Garba Buba, and one other resident.
Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the Police Headquarters, Bompai, Kano, where he gave an update on the security situation in the state.
Bakori said the command’s intelligence-led operations, 24-hour patrols, targeted raids and community engagement have led to a “drastic reduction in major crimes” across the state.
“All these engagements are being carried out under the directive and guidance of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, whose strategic policing vision has greatly strengthened our operational capacity and capabilities,” the CP stated.
According to him, 117 suspected thugs were arrested during coordinated operations in flashpoints across Kano Metropolis in August. He added that dangerous weapons and large quantities of illicit drugs were recovered.
“As a result of these sustained operations, we have recorded sustained peace in hitherto volatile areas including Dala, Kofar Nassarawa, Sheka, Dorayi, Rimin Kebbe, and Hotoro,” CP Bakori said. He, however, noted that operations are ongoing to dismantle remnants of thuggery activities in Bachirawa, Gobirawa and Tudun Fulani.
Despite the gains, tragedy struck in Bebeji LGA on Sunday night when gunmen invaded Rantan community.
“Last night, Sunday, suspected kidnappers attacked our town, Rantan. During the attack, they shot Alhaji Garba Buba, the APC chairman of Rantan Ward, who later died in hospital from the injuries sustained,” a community source said.
“They also shot Alhaji Sa’adu and killed another person, Sulaiman Zunduma,” he added.
Confirming the death, a family member, Hafsat Garba Rantan, said: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Gunmen have killed my paternal uncle.”
CP Bakori also confirmed that three people were also killed during the attack, vowed that Kano State will not be a safe haven for criminals fleeing from other states.
