Judge Raises Alarm Over Interference As Court Grants Malami, Others Bail

Trial judge warns against attempts to influence proceedings as former AGF Abubakar Malami, son and associate secure bail.

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has raised concerns over alleged attempts by lawyers and litigants to interfere with the ongoing money laundering case involving former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, hinting that such conduct would not be tolerated.

The judge made the remarks shortly after granting Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and an associate, Bashir Asabe, bail in the sum of ₦500 million each, ahead of the commencement of their trial scheduled for February 17.

Justice Nwite, in a stern warning delivered in open court, cautioned that he would take a serious view of any attempt by lawyers or litigants to “approach” him in a bid to influence the outcome of the case. He advised parties to rely on competent legal representation rather than unethical conduct, warning that anyone found flouting this directive would face grave consequences.

In granting bail, the court ordered each defendant to produce two sureties who must own verifiable properties in Maitama, Gwarimpa or Asokoro areas of Abuja. The sureties are required to submit documentary proof of ownership to the satisfaction of the court.

Justice Nwite further directed the defendants to deposit their international passports with the court registry, adding that none of them is permitted to travel outside the country without express approval of the court.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court ordered that Malami and his co-defendants remain in custody. The substantive trial is expected to commence on February 17, as earlier scheduled.
