Jim Bakker, the televangelist who built a Christian television media empire with his former wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, has died aged 86.
His wife, Lori Bakker, announced his death in a social media post on Monday, October 5.
“It is with a broken heart that I share that my beloved husband, Jim Bakker, went home to be with the Lord this evening.”
She said Bakker had spent 66 years preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and described him as a pioneer of Christian television. “To me, he was my husband, my best friend, and the man I was honored to walk beside through so many seasons of life and ministry.”
Lori also said Bakker loved people and remained committed to his ministry and its supporters until his final days. “Even in his final days, his heart was still for the work of God and for the Gospel to continue reaching the world.
“The family asked for prayers and privacy as they mourned his death. “Jim finished his race with faith. His voice, his vision, and his legacy will never be forgotten.”
Bakker founded The PTL Club, which he co-hosted with Tammy Faye from 1974 to 1987.
He most recently hosted The Jim Bakker Show on digital platforms.
Bakker’s life and career have also been depicted on screen.
Andrew Garfield portrayed him in the 2021 film The Eyes of Tammy Faye, while Jessica Chastain played Tammy Faye and won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2022.
Kevin Spacey also portrayed Bakker in the 1990 NBC television film Fall from Grace.
