Jigawa to Establish Disaster Management Trust Fund

The Jigawa State Government has concluded a plan to establish a Flood Disaster Emergency Trust Fund as part of the effort to cater to the management of recurrent flood disasters in the state.

The State Governor Mallam Umar Namadi announced this during an inauguration of the flood disaster management committee at the Government House, Dutse.

In a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, said the committee would be tasked with finalizing the establishment of the Trust Fund in the State.

According to him, the committee has been entrusted with the critical responsibility of ensuring the smooth establishment and operation of the Trust Fund under the chairmanship of Architect Aminu Kani.

Namadi expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far in addressing the 2022 flood disaster incident by taking swift action to address the pending issues based on the previous committee’s report.

He however, commended the efforts of the former committee, which mobilized over N1.1 billion in relief to assuage the suffering of over 34,000 victims, including families of the deceased.

“The objective is for the Trust Fund to serve as a first resort emergency response for rehabilitation and relief to disaster victims on a sustainable basis. Already a draft bill has been produced by the former committee but needs to be subjected to further review before it is finalized for further appropriate action.”

“The primary objectives of the newly inaugurated committee include: finalizing the operational modalities of the Permanent Flood Disaster Trust Fund, reviewing and updating the draft bill for the Trust Fund.”

Governor Namadi further explained that the Trust Fund will cover its establishment, funding sources, governance structure, operational procedures, and resolving any pending payment issues through reconciliations with relevant banks.

While expressing confidence in the committee members’ ability to fulfill their mandate within the two-month time frame, Governor Namadi, promised to provide all the necessary logistical support to facilitate the smooth operations of Its activities.
