Italian Fashion Icon Valentino Garavani Dies At 93

Italian fashion legend Valentino Garavani, widely known simply as Valentino, has passed away at the age of 93.

Italian fashion legend Valentino Garavani, widely known simply as Valentino, has passed away at the age of 93. Renowned for his luxurious and opulent designs, Valentino’s creations graced celebrities and world figures including Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Valentino co-founded the eponymous fashion house in 1960, cementing his place alongside icons like Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld. The Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation announced on Instagram that the designer died peacefully at his home in Rome, surrounded by family.

Valentino will lie in state at Piazza Mignanelli from 21 to 22 January, with his funeral service scheduled for 23 January at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs.

Born in Lombardy in May 1932, Valentino moved to Paris at 17 to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and later worked with celebrated designers including Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Dessès, and Guy Laroche. His signature “Valentino red,” inspired by a trip to Spain, became a global symbol of the brand, famously featured in his 2007 final collection where all models wore red.

In December 2023, Valentino was recognised with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, celebrating his enduring influence on the fashion world.

Valentino leaves behind a legacy of elegance, glamour, and unmatched artistry that reshaped haute couture for generations.
