Israel Prepared To ‘Stand Alone’ If US Halts Arms Shipment, Says Netanyahu

Netanyahu has said Israel will fight with its fingernails even if Biden halts shipment of arms to the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted Israel’s ability to “stand alone” after the United States issued a warning suggesting a potential halt in arms shipments if Israel pursued a full-scale invasion of Rafah in Gaza.

“If we need to, we will stand alone. I have said that if necessary, we will fight with our fingernails,” Netanyahu declared.

US President Joe Biden indicated that certain arms, including artillery shells, could be withheld if an invasion of Rafah were initiated. The US had already paused a shipment of bombs over concerns about civilian casualties.

Netanyahu, however, invoked Israel’s history, citing the War of Independence in 1948, to downplay US warnings, emphasizing Israel’s past triumph against odds. “In the War of Independence 76 years ago, we were the few against the many. We fid not have weapons. There was an arms embargo on Israel, but with great strength of spirit, we were victorious,” he stated.

Responding to potential arms embargo by the US, Netanyahu asserted Israel’s strength, stating, “We have much more than our fingernails,” expressing confidence in Israel’s ability to overcome challenges.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant echoed Netanyahu’s sentiments, asserting Israel’s resilience against adversaries. He said, “We will stand strong, we will achieve our goals.”

The statements came amidst reports of escalating violence, with over 80,000 people fleeing Rafah amid ongoing bombardment. Food and fuel shortages were reported among those sheltering in the city.

Israeli forces had closed the Rafah crossing with Egypt at the start of their operation and conducted targeted raids against Hamas elements in the city.

The UN said it was too dangerous for its staff and lorries to reach the reopened Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel. There’s a possibility of a full-scale invasion, which prompted Biden’s warning on arms supply.

Biden’s comments reflected concerns about civilian casualties and the broader strategic objectives in the conflict. The White House emphasized the shared goal of defeating Hamas while advocating for restraint in military actions.

Meanwhile, reports of casualties continued, with airstrikes hitting civilian areas in Rafah, further escalating tensions in the region.

Biden said that American bombs have been used to kill Palestinian civilians. He said, “If they go to Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah.”
