Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reportedly slightly injured during a targeted Israeli airstrike on a secret underground facility in Tehran last month, according to a report by Fars News Agency, which is closely aligned with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
The attack, which occurred on June 16 during the fourth day of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, allegedly involved six bombs that struck both the access and exit points of the facility. At the time, Pezeshkian was attending an emergency session of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s highest decision-making body after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The report claims that the president sustained leg injuries while escaping through an emergency shaft, after all main entry and exit routes were blocked and the facility’s ventilation and electricity systems were disabled by the strikes.
Fars News also indicated that Iranian intelligence is investigating possible infiltration by Israeli agents, suggesting that the level of precision in the strikes points to a severe breach in security.
While there has been no independent verification of the report, and Israel has not commented publicly on the alleged attack, it adds a new layer to what is already seen as one of the most intense episodes of direct confrontation between the two nations.
Videos that surfaced on social media during the conflict showed a series of powerful explosions in the mountains northwest of Tehran, now believed to have targeted the same underground compound where the attack on Pezeshkian allegedly took place.
Last week, President Pezeshkian publicly accused Israel of attempting to assassinate him. The accusation was denied by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who stated that regime change was “never the goal” of the war.
However, the Israeli offensive, which began on June 13, had wiped out several high-ranking commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian military. Reports also suggest that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was among the targets, though he was successfully moved to a highly secure location before being located by Israeli forces.
Iranian officials have admitted that the initial wave of Israeli attacks caught them off guard, resulting in what one unnamed insider described as a “paralysis in decision-making” for at least the first 24 hours.
The broader conflict began when Israel launched surprise attacks on several Iranian nuclear and military sites, claiming it aimed to thwart Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons program. Tehran denies the accusations, insisting that its uranium enrichment is strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes.
In a dramatic escalation, on June 22, the United States joined the fray, with coordinated air and missile strikes by its Air Force and Navy against three Iranian nuclear facilities. U.S. President Donald Trump later declared that the strikes had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, though some intelligence agencies within the US have expressed a more restrained assessment.
