Iran has warned the United States against expanding its military role in the Strait of Hormuz after a day of attacks disrupted shipping.
Abbas Araghchi said the US risks being “dragged back into the quagmire” if it deepens its involvement in the region.
The warning follows a US operation, known as “Project Freedom”, aimed at escorting stranded cargo ships through the waterway.
The United States says Iranian forces fired missiles and drones at both military and commercial vessels on Monday. Iran insists on control over the strait but has not confirmed the reported attacks.
South Korea and the United Arab Emirates reported damage to commercial ships. An incident linked to Iran also caused a fire at an oil depot in the UAE.
About 2,000 ships are estimated to be stuck in the strait, a key route for global oil shipments. The US says two of its flagged vessels have now left the area under military escort.
Donald Trump said US forces “shot down” seven Iranian fast boats during the operation. Tehran denied the claim.
Shipping company Maersk said one of its vessels has also exited the strait with US military support.Faridah Abdulkadiri
