A senior adviser to FIFA president, Gianni Infantino; Carlo Cordeiro has resigned after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), became the third confederation to oppose his proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors.
Carlos Cordeiro described the plan as “a bad deal for football” and warned it would “mortgage football’s future” before stepping down from his advisory role.
The AFC announced it “stands in solidarity” with UEFA and Concacaf, arguing the proposal cannot “realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required to move forward.”
The confederation added that the FIFA World Cup’s strength lies in the participation of all confederations and leading football nations, warning any proposal that threatens the competition’s unity and universal nature should be reconsidered.
With UEFA’s 55 members, Concacaf’s 35 and the AFC’s 46 all opposing the proposal, 136 of FIFA’s 211 member associations are now aligned against the plan, well above the 106 votes Gianni Infantino indicated would be needed for approval.
