India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader of wisdom and a steadfast friend to India.
In a tribute posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Modi said:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India-Nigeria friendship stood out.”
The Indian leader noted that Buhari played a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries during his presidency.
He added “I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people and the government of Nigeria.”
Former President Buhari died on Sunday in London at approximately 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness. His passing has drawn condolences from world leaders, including African heads of state and now the Prime Minister of India.
